70,000 People's Direct entry to Paradise!

Bismillaah, wal-hamdulilaah, was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa rasoolillaah,

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatuallahi wa barakatuhu

70,000 People's Direct entry to Paradise!

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (salal lahu alaihi wa sallam) is His slave and the seal of His Messengers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.606 Narrated by Ibn Abbas

Allah's Messenger (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘Nations were displayed before me; one or two Prophets would pass by along with a few of their followers. A Prophet would pass by accompanied by nobody. Then a big crowd of people passed in front of me and I asked, 'Who are they? Are they my followers?' It was said, 'No. It is Moses and his followers.' It was said to me, 'Look at the horizon.' Behold! There was a multitude of people filling the horizon. Then it was said to me, 'Look there and there about the stretching sky!' Behold! There was a multitude filling the horizon. It was said to me, 'This is your nation out of whom seventy thousand shall enter Paradise without reckoning.' Then the Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) entered his house without telling his companions who they (the 70,000) were. So the people started talking about the issue and said, "It is we who have believed in Allah and followed His Messenger (saws); therefore those people are either ourselves or our children who are born in the Islamic era, for we were born in the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance.'' When the Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) heard of that, he (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) came out and said. "Those (70,000) people are those who do not treat themselves with Ruqya, nor do they believe in bad or good omen, nor do they get themselves branded (cauterized), but they put their trust (only) in their Lord." On that 'Ukasha bin Muhsin said, "Am I one of them, O Allah's Messenger (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam)?" The Prophet (saws) said, "Yes." Then another person got up and said, "Am I one of them?" The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) said, -Ukasha has anticipated you."

Imaam al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated in his Saheeh from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I was shown the nations, and some Prophets passed by with a few followers, and some Prophets passed by with no followers. Then I was shown a great multitude, and I said, ‘What is this? Is this my ummah?’ It was said, ‘No, this is Moosa and his people.’ It was said, ‘Look at the horizon.’ There I saw a huge multitude filling the horizon. And it was said, ‘Look there, and there, on the horizons of the sky.’ There was a multitude filling the horizons. It was said, ‘This is your ummah, and of these, seventy thousand will enter Paradise without being brought to account.’” Then he [the Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] went inside, without explaining further. The people started to discuss what he had said, saying, “We are the ones who have believed in Allaah and followed His Messenger; we are they” or, “It is our children who were born in Islam whilst we were born in Jaahiliyyah.” The Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) heard about what was being said, so he came out and said: “They are the ones who do not seek ruqya, do not believe in bad omens and do not use branding; they put their trust in their Lord…”

in another hadeeth, narrated by Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allaah be pleased with him), according to which the Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Seventy thousand or seven hundred thousand [one of the narrators was not sure] of my ummah will enter Paradise, and the first of them will not enter until the last of them do so. And their faces will be like the moon on the night when it is full.”
(Reported by al-Bukhaari).

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: ‘A group of my ummah seventy thousand strong will enter Paradise, with their faces shining like the moon.”
(Reported by al-Bukhaari).

Muslim also reported about them in his Saheeh from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah: “… then the believers will be saved and the first group to be saved will have faces like the moon when it is full, [they will be] seventy thousand, who will not be brought to account. Then will come those who shine like the stars in the sky…”

There is more information in a report narrated in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmad and the Sunan of al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Maajah, where Abu Umaamah is reported to have said that the Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam said: “My Lord promised me that seventy thousand of my ummah will enter Paradise without being brought to account or being punished; with each thousand of them will be another seventy thousand, plus three handfuls of the handfuls of my Lord, may He be glorified.”

The final part of the good news comes in another saheeh hadeeth, in which he Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The people of Paradise are 120 rows, of which eighty are from this ummah and the other forty from all the other nations.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 3469; he said this is a hasan hadeeth).

The Book of Faith (Kitab Al-Iman) Muslim :: Book 1 : Hadith 427
Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported: The Messenger of Allah
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam (may peace be upon him) addressing us said: Aren't you pleased that you should constitute one-fourth of the inhabitants of Paradise? He (the narrator) said: We glorified (our Lord, i. e. we called aloud Allah-o Akbar, Allah is the Greatest). He, then, again said: Aren't you pleased that you should constitute one-third of the inhabitants of Paradise? He (the narrator) said: We glorified (our Lord) and he (the Holy Prophet) then again said: I hope that you would constitute half of the inhabitants of Paradise and I shall explain to you its (reason). The believers among the unbelievers would not be more than a white hair on (the body of a) black ox or a black hair on (the body of a) white ox.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 56 Surah Waqiah verse

10 And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter)!

11 These will be those Nearest to Allah:

12 In Gardens of Bliss:

13 A (vast) number of people from those of old

14 And a few from those of later times.

Allah Alone Knows who these fortunate 70,000 believers would be, but in light of the above verse of Surah Al-Waqiah, it is safe to assume that a vast majority of them will be those from the earliest generation of believers and a few of them will be believers from later times.

What is meant by not treating oneself with ruqya?

People used all sorts of ‘ruqyas’ or charms, or incantations, or spells, wearing amulets, etc. to remove their afflictions before they became Muslim believing that could remove their afflictions. But after accepting Islam it has been forbidden because only Allah heals.

Ruqya in Islamic sense is allowed

The term or act of ‘ruqya’ when used in the Islamic sense would mean the recital of some incantation seekings Allah’s help for a specific fear or ailment. Before the revelations of the Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Naas, the Messenger of Allah (saws) would at times perform the ‘ruqya’ and seek Allah’s help.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.632 Narrated by Abu Said Al Khudri

Some of the companions of the Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet), "Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" The Prophet's (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it." So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet's (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) (whether it is lawful)." When they asked him, he (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me."

Note: It must be with the speech of Allah[Quran], His names and attributes, or the speech of His Messenger (sallalahualaihiwasallam) & du’aa’s so long as they do not contradict what is in the Qur’aan and Sunnah.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.640 Narrated by Aisha

Allah's Messenger (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) used to treat with a ‘Ruqya’ saying, "O the Lord of the people! Remove the trouble. The cure is in Your Hands, and there is none except You Who can remove it (the disease). "

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.638 Narrated by Abdul Aziz

Thabit and I went to Anas bin Malik. Thabit said, "O Abu Hamza! I am sick." On that Anas said, "Shall I treat you with the Ruqya of Allah's Messenger (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam)?" Thabit said, "Yes." Anas recited, "O Allah! The Lord of the people, the Remover of trouble! (Please) cure (heal this patient), for You are the Healer. None brings about healing but You; a healing that will leave behind no ailment."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 1019 Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri

The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) used to seek protection against the Jinn and the evil eye till Surahs al-Falaq and an-Naas were revealed. After they were revealed, he (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) stuck to them and discarded everything beside them.

Before the revelation of the Muawidaat (113th Surah Al-Falaq and 114th Surah An-Naas), the Messenger of Allah (sallalahualaihiwasallam) would seek the protection of Allah by reciting a ‘ruqya’ supplication; but after the revelation of these two magnificent Surahs, the Messenger of Allah (saws) would seek the protection of Allah from all evils through their recitation.

Quran is healing & mercy to believers

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 82:

82 We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.

Surah Yunus verse 57 O mankind! There hath come to you a direction (The Quran) from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts and for those who believe a Guidance and a Mercy.

Ibn Teen (Rahimuhullah) said:"Treating with Muawwizaat, (Surah An-Naas, Al-Falaq, etc) and other forms, such as the names of Allah are medicine for the soul. So if these forms of treatment are on the tongue of the righteous, cure will be achieved bythe will of Allah."

Amulets

Uqbah ibn 'Amir narrates that the Messenger of Allah (
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "If anyone wears an amulet, may Allah not help him in fulfilling his wish. If anyone wears a sea-shell around his neck, may Allah give him no peace."Narrated by Ahmad and Al-Hakim.

It is reported from Ibn Mas'ud that once, when he entered to his home, he noticed his wife wearing a knotted object round her neck. He took it away and broke it. Then he remarked: 'The family of Abdullah has become so arrogant that they now associate with Allah those for whom He has sent down no authority.' I have heard the Messenger of Allah (
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) saying: 'Verily, incantations, amulets, and love charms are acts of shirk (associating false gods with Allah).' The people said: 'O Abu Abdullah! We are familiar with incantations and amulets, but what is a love charm (altawlah)'?' He replied: 'It is a sort of magical formula by which women sought to gain their husbands' love'." (Related by Al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban).

Imran ibn Hasin reports that the Messenger of Allah (
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) saw a man wearing a bracelet of copper on his arm. The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) exclaimed to him: 'Woe be to you!' What is this? ' The man replied: 'I am suffering from weakness (al-wahinah).' (Al-wahinah is a disease that causes pain in the shoulders and hands. The man was wearing a copper bracelet believing it would relieve his pain and suffering). The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) prohibited him from wearing it because he regarded it as an amulet. The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) said: 'It will give you nothing but pain. Throw it away. Had you died while wearing it, you would never have achieved salvation'." (Narrated by Ahmad)

Isa ibn Hamza said: I went to see Abdullah ibn Hakim and his face was red due to high fever. I said to him: 'Why don't you use an amulet?' He said: 'We seek refuge with Allah from it. The Messenger of Allah (
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Whoever wears anything as an amulet will be entrusted to it". (Narrated by Abu Daw'ud)

It was narrated from Abu Basheer al-Ansaari (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he was with the Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) on one of his journeys, and the people were at their places of rest. The Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) sent a messenger (saying): “No camel is to be left among any group of people with a garland of sinew or a garland, but it is to be cut off.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2843) and Muslim (2115).

Note:His words: “a garland of sinew or a garland” – the narrator was not sure, but the former is more likely, because garlands were made from sinew, and they believed that that could ward off the evil eye from the camels.

Pendants with Words from the Qur’an or Hadith

‘Amr ibn Shu’aib relates from his father and from his grandfather, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-’Aas, that the Prophet,
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam, peace be upon him, said: “If one of you is frightened while sleeping, one should say: A’uzhu billah min hamazatish shayatin wa an yahdrun ‘ I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from His anger, His chastisement, from the evil of His creatures, and from the suggestions and approach of devils.’ Then one will never be harmed.” ‘Amr ibn Shu’aib related further that ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr used to teach this prayer to his older sons who could comprehend and memorize. For those who were not able to do so, he wrote these words down, wrapped them as pendants, and made them wear these around their necks.” (Narrated by Abu Daw’ud, Nasa’i, and Tirmihi, who says it is an acceptable but unknown hadith. Al-Hakim says it is sound)

‘Aishah, Malik, and most of the scholars of the schools of Ash-Shafi’i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal also subscribe to this view. Nevertheless Ibn ‘Abbas, Ibn Mas’ud, scholars of the Hanafi school, and some scholars of the Ash-Shafi’i and Hanbali schools, according to one study, are of the opinion that it is not permissible for a person to wear anything as an amulet in the light of the above mentioned general prohibition regarding amulets.

What is ill omen

The following text of it contained in the sixth volume of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hambal’s Musnad says:
Abu-Hassan reports that two people came to A’ishah and said to her that Abu Hurayrah narrates that the Prophet
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam used to say that bad luck is to be found only in women, horses and houses. At this A’ishah replied: By the God who revealed the Qur’an to the Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa sallam! The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa sallam never said this; what he did say was that the People of the Jahilliyyah hold this opinion.

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood that the Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him)sallalahu alaihi wa sallam said: “Tiyarah (superstitious belief in bird omens) is shirk.” Narrated by Abu Dawood (3910)

Branding with fire (cauterizing)-Forbidding here means that it is makrooh, the reason why it is makrooh is because it causes suffering and pain.

Medicine Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 71 :: Hadith 584 Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
(The Prophet said)
sallalahu alaihi wa sallam, "Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing)." But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire."

Those which indicate that he did not like it, such as the hadeeth of Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “If there is anything good in your medicine it is in the instrument of the cupper or drinking honey or cauterizing with fire that suits the ailment, but I would not like to be cauterized.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5683; Muslim, 2205.

Those which indicate that cauterization is makrooh, such as the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah have mercy on him) who said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Healing is to be found in three things: the instrument of the cupper, drinking honey and cauterization with fire, but I forbid my ummah to use cauterization.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5681.

Those which indicate that it is permissible, such as the hadeeth of Jaabir who said: Ubayy was struck by an arrow in his medial arm vein on the day of al-Ahzaab, and the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cauterized it. Narrated by Muslim, 2207.

In the hadeeth of ‘Imraan ibn Husayn (may Allaah be pleased with him) it says that the angels would greet him because he did not use cauterization. When he used it, they stopped greeting him, then when he stopped using it, they started to greet him again. Narrated by Muslim, 1226.

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said: I do not know of any scholarly difference of opinion, for they did not see anything wrong with cauterization if there was a need for it.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 3:And put your trust in Allah Alone; and enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verse 51:Say: "Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us: He is our Protector"; and on Allah let the believers put their trust.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale Imraan verse 160:If Allah helps you none can overcome you: if He forsakes you who is there after that that can help you? In Allah then let believers put their trust.

Alhamdulilahi Rabbil Alameen.

Ruqya

Recite Aayat al-Kursi when you lie down to sleep. Say: “Bismillaah illadhi laa yadurru ma’a ismihi shay’un fi’l-ardi wa laa fi’s-samaa’ wa huwa as-Samee’ al-‘Aleem (In the Name of Allaah, with (the mention of) Whose Name nothing on earth or in heaven can do any harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing)” three times in the morning and three times in the evening.

hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh and by other scholars of hadeeth, from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). She said: “When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went to bed each night, he would put his hands together and blow in between them and recite in between them [interpretations of the meanings]: Qul huwa Allaahu ahad (Say: He is Allaah, (the) One), Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Falaq (Say: I seek refuge with (Allaah) the Lord of the daybreak) and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’n-naas (Say: I seek refuge with (Allaah) the Lord of mankind) [i.e., the last three soorahs of the Qur’an], then he would wipe with his hands whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face, and the front part of his body, doing that three times.” Pray to Allaah to rid you of what you are suffering from, and say: “Adh-hib al-ba’s Rabb an-naas washfi anta’sh-Shaafee laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an la yughaadir saqaman (Remove the suffering, Lord of mankind, and heal me, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, the healing which does not leave any illness behind)”, repeating that three times. Also recite the du’aa’ (supplication) for one in distress: “La ilaaha ill-Allaah ul-‘Azeem ul-Haleem, la ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb il-‘arsh il-‘azeem, la ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb us-samawaati wa Rabb ul-ardi wa Rabb ul-‘arsh il-kareem (There is no god but Allaah, the Almighty, the Patient. There is no god but Allaah, Lord of the magnificent Throne. There is no god but Allaah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the noble Throne).”

The Fear Of Allah

THE FEAR OF THE ANGELS, ALAYHIM ASSALAAM
[The following are from ibn qudaamah's mukhtasar minhajul qaasideen, pages 319-323]

Allah has said describing them,
يَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ
They fear Allah from above them and they do what they are commanded.
[an-Nahl : 50]
And we have narrated from the Prophet that he said, “Verily, Allah has angels who tremble out of fear of Him.”
[al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu'ab #914, al-Khateeb in Taareekh Baghdad 12/307]
And it has reached us that from the carriers of the Throne are [angels] whose tears flow like rivers, so if [one] raises his head he says, “Glory be to You, You are not feared as You deserve to be feared.” Allah will say, “But those who swear oaths by My Name are liars [and] do not know this.”
And from Jaabir, “Rasul Allah said, ‘When it was the night of my ascension, I saw Jibreel like a worn-out rag from the fear of Allah.’”
[Ahmad in al-Musnad 4/25-26]
And it has reached us that Jibreel came to the Prophet and was crying. So the Prophet asked him, ‘What makes you cry?’ He said, “My eyes have not been dry since Allah created Jahannam, out of fear that I would disobey Him and He would throw me in it.”
[al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu'ab #915]
And from Yazeed al-Ruqaashi, “Allah has angels around the Throne, their eyes cry [tears] like rivers until the Day of Resurrection. They sway as though the wind was shaking them, out of their fear of Allah ta’aala. So Allah, Mighty and Exalted, will say to them, ‘O My angels, what has frightened you when you are with Me?’ They will say, ‘O Lord, if the people of the earth knew of your Honor and Glory the way we know of it, they would not have [been able to] swallow food nor drink, nor would they lie down in their beds. They would go out to the deserts and bellow like the cows bellow.”
And Muhammad bin al-Munkadir said, “When the Fire was created, the hearts of the angels flew from their place, and when Adam was created, they returned.”
And it has been narrated that when Iblees’ affair came to pass, Jibreel and Mika’eel began crying. So Allah said to them, “What is this crying?” They said, “Our Lord, we are not safe from your plotting.” So Allah said to them, “So be it [ i.e. safe].”

THE FEAR OF THE PROPHETS, ALAYHIM ASSALAAM

Wahb said, “Adam cried over Jannah for 300 years, and he did not raise his head to the Heavens after he committed the mistake.”
And Wuhaib ibn al-Ward said, “When Allah rebuked Nuh over his son when he said “I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers” [Hud : 46], Nuh cried 300 years, until there appeared under his eyes the likeness of creeks from [all of his] crying.”
Abud-Dardaa said, “Wheezing could be heard from Ibrahim’s chest whenever he rose to prayer, out of fear of Allah, Mighty and Exalted.”
And Mujaahid said, “When Daawood committed his mistake, he fell down prostrate to Allah for 40 days, until from the tears of his eyes there grew herbs that covered his head. Then he called, ‘O Lord, the forehead has been injured and the eyes have hardened, and nothing has yet to return to Daawood.’ So [a voice] called, ‘Are you hungry for you to eat? Or sick for you to be cured? Or oppressed for you to be aided?’ So he wailed a cry that aroused every growing thing, and upon that, he was forgiven.”
And it was said, ‘The people would visit Daawood thinking he was sick, but there was nothing with him except intense fear of Allah.’”
And Isa- if death was mentioned- his skin would drip blood.

THE FEAR OF THE PROPHET, SALALLAHU ALAYHI WA SALLAM
Narrated ‘Aisha: “I never saw Allah’s Apostle laughing loudly enough to enable me to see his uvula, but he used to smile only. And whenever he saw clouds or winds, signs of deep concern would appear on his face. I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! When people see clouds they usually feel happy, hoping that it would rain, while I see that when you see clouds, one could notice signs of dissatisfaction on your face.” He said, “O ‘Aisha! What is the guarantee for me that there will be no punishment in it, since some people were punished with a wind? Verily, some people saw the punishment, but [while seeing the cloud] they said, ‘This cloud will give us rain.’ “
[Bukhari #4454, Muslim #1497]
And when the Prophet prayed, a sound like the wheezing of a cauldron could be heard because of his weeping.
[an-Nisaa’I #1199, Abu Daawood #769]

THE FEAR OF HIS COMPANIONS, RAADI ALLAHU ANHOM
We have narrated from Abu Bakr that he would hold his tongue and say, “This is what has led me to destruction.”
And he said, “If only I were a tree that is chewed and then eaten.”
And similarly were Talha and Abud-Dardaa and Abu Dharr.
And Umar ibnul Khattab would hear an ayah and become sick and withdraw for days.
And one day, he picked up a piece of straw from the ground and said, “If only I were this piece of straw. If only I was never anything mentioned! If only my mother never gave birth to me!”
And on his face were two black streaks from his great weeping.
And Uthmaan said, “I wish that if I die, that I am not resurrected.”
And Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah said, “I wish that I was a ram for my family to slaughter and eat my meat and drink my broth.”
And Umraan bin Haseen said, “I wish that I were ashes scattered by the wind.”
And Hudhayfah said, “I wish I had a person to take charge of my money so I could close my door upon me and no one would enter upon me until I meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”
And a line [down which tears flowed] was on the cheek of Ibn Abbas, like a worn-out lace.
And Aishah said, “I wish that I was a forgotten thing.”
And Ali said, “By Allah, I have seen the Companions of Muhammad. I see no-one that resembles them [today]. By Allah! They used to rise in the morning disheveled, dust-covered, [and] pale, with something between their eyes like goat’s knees, as they had spent the night chanting Allah’s Book, turning from their feet to their foreheads. If they awakened and Allah was mentioned they swayed the way trees sway on a windy day, then their eyes poured out tears until they soaked their clothes. By Allah! It is as if folks today sleep in indifference.”

THE FEAR OF THE TAABI’EEN AND THOSE AFTER THEM
Haram bin Hiyaan said, “I wish, by Allah, that I was a tree that a camel would eat and discharge as droppings, and that I would not endure the reckoning of the Day of Resurrection; verily, I fear the Great Calamity.”
And Ali bin al Hussain would turn yellow when he made wuduu’ and [his appearance would] change. So it would be said to him, “What is it?” He would say, “Do you know before Whom I will stand?”
And Muhammad bin Waasi’ would cry for most of the night and would not let up.
And Umar bin Abdul-Azeez, if death was mentioned, would quiver the way the birds quiver, and cry until his tears wet his beard.
And one night he cried, and those in his house wept [with him]. Faatimah [his wife] said, “What is with you o Ameerul-Mu’mineen? From what are you weeping?” He said, “I remembered the departure of the people before Allah ta’aala, a party in Paradise, and a party in the Blazing Fire.” Then he shrieked and [had to be] covered up.
And when al-Mansoor sought Jerusalem, he stopped at a monastery Umar bin Abdul-Azeez would stay at. So he said, “Inform me about the strangest thing you saw from Umar.” [It was replied], “He spent one night on the roof of this room of mine and it is made of marble. So I found water dripping from the roof [gutter]. I went up and [found him] prostrating, and the tears from his eyes were flowing down the gutter.”
And we narrated about Umar bin Abdul-Azeez and Fat’h al-Mousalee that they would cry [tears of] blood.
And Ibrahim bin Isa al-Yashkaree said, “I entered upon a man in Bahrein who had withdrawn from the people and gave all his time to himself. He remembered something from the affairs of the aakhirah and he remembered death. He began to sob until his soul left him.”
And Masma’ said, “I witnessed Abdul-Waahid bin Zayd when he was exhorting the people, and four people died that day in the gathering.”
And Yazeed bin Murshid would cry often and say, “By Allah, if my Lord promised to imprison me in the bathroom, it would be a right upon me to never cease weeping. So how is it when He has promised to imprison me in the Fire if I disobey Him?”
And Saari as-Saqatee said, “Verily, I look every day at my nose, fearing that my face has become blackened.”
This is the fear of the angels and prophet and ulemaa and awliyaa. And we are more deserving of having fear than they. But fear [does not come] with the plentitude of sins, rather with the clarity of the heart and the perfection of knowledge. And we feel safe due to the dominance of our ignorance and the strength of our hard-heartedness. The purified heart is burned by the slightest knowledge, and the hardened heart will miss all exhortations.
And some of the salaf said, “I said to a monk, ‘Advise me.’ He said, ‘If you are able to reach the rank of a man who [finds himself] surrounded by beasts and vermin and he is fearful and cautious and fears that they will eat him if he is inattentive or bite him if he is unmindful- so he is terrified- then do so.”
And what this monk said about the thinking of a man surrounded by beasts and vermin- this is the reality of the true mu’min- the one who looks into his interior with the light of his insight will find it full of beasts and vermin like anger and hate and envy and pride and conceit and showing off and what is besides that. And all of that bites him and eats him if he is inattentive to them, unless he is screened from seeing them. So if the cover is removed and he is placed in the grave, he will see [these qualities] with his own eyes in the form of snakes and scorpions. They are his characteristics present [in him] now, so whoever desires to vanquish them before death and kill them, let him do it, or else will have to adjust himself wholeheartedly to their sting.
